All freight and shipping companies are in need of reliable drivers to pick up and deliver freight from one location to another. The responsibilities of a driver are many. They are not only responsible for the pick-up and delivery of freight to and from manufacturers, distribution centers, and customers but they are also responsible for loading and unloading the cargo picked up.
Drivers are also responsible for making sure that all driving related laws are followed. It is also their responsibility to make sure that their activities are properly logged and that their vehicle is always in good working condition. Companies that offer driving jobs normally have vacancies for two types of drivers: long-distance drivers and short-distance drivers.
Long-distance drivers are normally given a delivery location and a deadline. They are then responsible for determining the routes that they will follow to make sure that the shipment is delivered on time. During this process, they also need to make sure that they fill out logs of their activities and that they follow all applicable rules. Some companies may use two drivers for really long distances to minimize downtime.
Short-distance drivers are normally employed to carry shipments from distribution centers to households or businesses. These drivers are normally required to deliver several loads in a day and if necessary, they are allowed to accept payments for deliveries or to handle necessary paper work such as receipts and delivery confirmations.
The job of a driver is a demanding job – driving for hours, fighting traffic to meet deadlines, and loading and unloading cargo. Sometimes long-distance drivers are required to be away from home for days or even weeks. In order to become a qualified driver, most prospective drivers will need to successfully complete driver-training courses at a vocation or technical school that will teach them how to maneuver large vehicles on crowed streets and how to comply with freight regulations.
As a condition of employment, most companies are required by federal regulations to test drivers for drug and alcohol usage. In many countries, a driver will not be hired if he or she has been convicted of a felony which involves the use of a vehicle or driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
